Frequently Asked Questions
About WidSets
What is WidSets?
WidSets is a simple service that brings you information normally accessed via the Internet by sending it directly to your mobile phone . Using mini-applications called widgets, it sends you the latest updates to your favorite websites. The system uses RSS feeds to push information from these websites directly to your mobile phone the minute they’re updated.
Just install WidSets on your phone, select the widgets that interest you and start using it. As soon as one of the websites you’ve chosen is updated (e.g. a news service, blog or weather forecast site), the widget for that website sends you an alert.
What are widgets?
Widgets help you easily access information as soon as it's available on the Internet.
Widgets use RSS feeds which ‘push’ information to your phone in the form of short descriptive links. You can then either read the brief description or download all of the content.
New widgets are constantly being developed. Get news updates, know as soon as someone posts a comment on your blog, stay up to date on traffic, weather and the latest gossip, play games, chat, interact with your web communities and more.
What is an RSS feed?
Websites that constantly update their information, such as news wires, use a service that generates a special ‘feed’ containing just the headlines. You need a ‘client’ in order to receive this RSS feed. WidSets is a client. You tell WidSets which RSS feeds (we call them widgets) you are interested in and WidSets tells you when they’ve been updated.
Instead of wading through all those newsletters or visiting websites, you just open your WidSets client and scan the headlines from your chosen widgets. If something catches your attention, click on the link and the full story will be displayed.
WidSets vs. widgets?
WidSets is the service you access via www.widsets.com and use on your mobile phone. Widgets are the little boxes - or mini-applications – inside WidSets that get information for you from the Internet.

How much does WidSets cost?
WidSets is absolutely free, but your service provider may charge you for data transferred to your phone, i.e. for visiting websites or using data transfer services such as browsing the Internet. So keep in mind that whenever WidSets sends information right to your mobile, you may be paying for it.
The costs depend on the contract you have with your operator. Contact your operator for data transfer costs. Remember that roaming (using another operator’s network, e.g. when traveling abroad) data costs can be pretty high, so it’s definitely worth looking into.
What does my phone need to get WidSets working?
You’ll need access to the Internet and a mobile phone that supports Java MIDP 2.0. If you are not familiar with Java MIDP 2.0, check your phone’s user manual or the manufacturer’s website.
You will need to ensure that your mobile phone can connect to the Internet, which usually requires a data subscription. If your phone does not yet have Internet access, contact your network operator for assistance.
Which mobile phones support WidSets?
The best way to find out if your mobile phone supports WidSets is to try it out. You’ll need a phone that supports Java MIDP 2.0 (most mobile phones currently on the market do) and is able to connect to the Internet.
We’re doing our best to make WidSets compatible with as many different phone models as possible. But with the constant flow of new phone models and new widgets, we are never going be able to test every single widget on every phone model and every operator’s network. As such, we’re really grateful for all feedback on how WidSets is working/not working on your particular phone model. Just go to the Forum and leave your feedback we’ll do our best to help you. Or, check to see if your question has already been answered.
A list of compatible phone models can be found at: www.widsets.com/info/compatibility.html.
What character encoding does WidSets support?
WidSets currently supports Unicode (UTF-8 encoding). This means that WidSets works on mobiles with Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew or Greek character sets.
What are the Terms of Service?
In order to make WidSets a pleasant experience for everyone, we have set up a few Dos and Don’ts. Basically, don’t offend anyone with abusive material or content that may be unsuitable for a public site.
Please read our Terms of Service at www.widsets.com. They'll give you a pretty good idea of what's allowed and what will get you banned.

WidSets Troubleshooting
I'm having problems on the 'installing WidSets' page. What should I do?
If you are registering via www.widsets.com, you'll need to provide your mobile phone number se we can send you the client download link via text message. Although you may have already done this, sometimes these messages are lost. If this happens to you:
Be patient. It could take some time for the message to reach your phone.
Make sure you entered the correct phone number. You don’t necessarily need to add the country code.
Try other ways of installing the client (see the 'Getting Started' section).
If you try to send the text message more than five times, you will receive an error message telling you that you have exceeded the daily maximum number (5) of text messages.
How do I re-install WidSets?
If you need to re-install WidSets on your phone, just go to www.widsets.com, log on to your personal page with your username and password. Go to My Profile > Settings and click on the 'Reload' button. We will send you a text message containing the client download link.
Uou can also use your phone's web browser to download WidSets from get.widsets.com. Use your existing username to log in and you'll be able to install the same profiled client.
Why is the WidSets dashboard on my mobile phone empty?
Once you have installed WidSets and you open it for the first time on your mobile phone, you still might not see any widgets on your dashboard. This is probably because you are offline and the dashboard has not been updated.
If this is the case, you should check the access point being used for WidSets. This will depend on your service provider, but basically you need to be able to access the Internet e.g. GPRS/Internet. The most important thing is that you are not using WAP settings, as they will not work for WidSets.
Another possible cause could be in your connection type. There are two options in your WidSets client under the heading Options - Application - Settings – Connection: Socket and HTTP. Try switching between the HTTP and Socket connections. The default setting is a Socket connection, but if your service provider doesn't support this form of connection, you may have to switch to HTTP.
Why is WidSets causing my mobile phone to crash?
You have probably selected more widgets that your phone can handle. You'll need to remove some widgets from the dashboard by going to www.widsets.com. JLeave a couple of widgets on your dashboard and try opening WidSets again.
In some cases, your mobile may not be able to handle the WidSets application even though it supports Java MIDP 2.0. The best thing to do is try to install WidSets and see what happens .
How do I clear cached data from WidSets?
If you have problems with phone memory usage, try clearing cached data from the WidSets application. Start WidSets and select Options – Application – Clear cached data. The data will be cleared when you restart the WidSets application.
How do I use WidSets on my BlackBerry?
On BlackBerry devices, Q stands for the left softkey and P for the right softkey. For example, when you first start using WidSets, press Q to accept the Terms of Service. Later on, pressing Q will open Options. Use P to toggle between widgets with the latest updates.
Not all BlackBerry devices support WidSets. Go to the WidSets Forum for more information.
Other problems
When looking for answers to any questions you might have in the Forum, it’s always a good idea to have the WidSets log file open to help with the investigation . To find the log file in your mobile phone, go to Options – Application – Settings – Developer mode – On, then click on ‘Done’. Then re-open the Options file and click on ‘Developer’, under which you will find the latest log.
